I need us to retire a few phrases from our ideal client profiles: high-achieving women, ambitious founders, purpose-driven entrepreneurs, six-figure business owners, and my personal favorite, women who are “ready to invest.”

These are not audiences. They’re adjectives.

We’ve spent years building marketing strategies around audience characteristics that tell us almost nothing about whether someone will actually buy. If your ideal client profile tells me she’s 38, lives in Austin, shops at Whole Foods, does Pilates, and makes $250,000 a year, great. Now tell me what she does when she realizes she has a $50,000 problem.

That information is significantly more useful.

Demographics Are Not Buyer Intelligence

Income does not tell you urgency. Achievement does not tell you buying behavior. A job title does not tell you how someone makes decisions.

The thing that matters is how your audience thinks and buys.

What do they believe about the problem you solve, what have they already tried, what are they skeptical about, what makes them move quickly? What makes them hesitate? Do they value speed, expertise, convenience, certainty, access, or customization?

That is buyer intelligence, and it should be at the center of your audience strategy.

Find the Moment They Become a Buyer

One of the most valuable questions you can ask is: What happened immediately before this person started looking for a solution?

Maybe sales dropped, or they hired five employees. Maybe they landed a massive opportunity and realized their infrastructure couldn’t support it, or their company grew, but their brand still looked embarrassingly small.

Buying behavior is often triggered by change. Something happens that makes tolerating the existing problem more expensive than fixing it.

Your marketing should recognize that moment.

Build an Ideal Client Profile Around Compatibility

Here’s where I think most ideal client exercises completely miss the mark. Your ideal customer should not simply be someone capable of paying you.

They should also be someone you actually want to work with.

Look at your best clients and your nightmare clients. What behaviors separate them? Who trusted your expertise, got results, fit your process or referred other great clients?

Your new ideal client profile should account for who they are, the moment they’re in, their mindset, their motivation, their buying behavior, and their compatibility with your business.

Because your audience isn’t just who could buy.

It’s who recognizes the problem, values the solution, is ready to act, and fits the way you work.

If your marketing isn’t converting, you might not need better content. You might be marketing beautifully to the wrong fucking person.
